January 2024-Pure as New York snow!

January 21, 2024

If you have your Picture This Photography 2024 calendar this is your January image “Pure as New York snow”

There is nothing like winter in New York City: even in the biting cold the snow covered streets & parks look magical and be sure to check out the frozen lakes & fountains!

The Loeb Boathouse in Central Park is a charming New York City landmark positioned mid park on the east side of the lake. It is close to both The Ramble & Bethesda Terrace and has amazing views across the lake to the gorgeous architecture of the upper west side.

The boat house restaurant houses both indoor and outdoor dining with an outdoor bar overlooking the boat rental & storage hub. The row boats are available to rent and offer a leisurely way to explore the lake giving visitors & locals an ideal way to explore one of Central Park’s most significant landscapes.

Boating on the Lake is one of Central Park’s most enduring traditions that offers urban dwellers quintessentially rural experiences and park designers promoted boating as an ideal way to explore the Lake’s scenic beauty. From  the 1860s Park visitors could take a “passage boat” that completed a circuit of the Lake stopping at various boat landings.

As boating grew in popularity Park administrators realized they need a building to house boat rentals. The first boathouse was constructed in 1870s on the eastern side of the Lake. It was an ornate wooden structure designed by Calvert Vaux. By the 1950s, this structure had fallen into disrepair and the current boathouse was designed as a more modern facility with restaurants and restrooms.

📷 This image was captured from the pathway behind the row boat rental at the boathouse. The bare trees allow the exposed view across the lake to the upper west side to see the double tower of the beautiful beaux-arts San Remo building and The Langham, to the left barely visible is The Dakota building. I love the freshly-fallen snow covering the boats and lake while the hint of blue sky allows for highlights & shadows within the snowy landscape.

Insider Tip-Around Christmas there is a floating Christmas Tree on display in the middle of the lake visible from this spot.
